What each source counts

GitHub: New repositories, issues and pull requests per month, commits that name Claude, Copilot, Codex or Cursor as co-author, and pull requests that AI agents open.
US businesses (Census): The share of US businesses that use AI now or expect to within six months, from the Census Bureau's Business Trends and Outlook Survey.
npm: Monthly downloads of AI SDKs and agent CLIs — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, the Vercel AI SDK — and of the whole npm registry.
PyPI: Monthly downloads of AI Python packages — model-vendor SDKs, agent frameworks, inference servers, Model Context Protocol (MCP) libraries — and of all of PyPI.
Hugging Face: Downloads and likes for open models such as Llama, Qwen, DeepSeek, Gemma, Mistral and Whisper, and the Daily Papers feed.
OpenAlex: Scholarly works per month in AI fields, the fields next to them, computer science and all research, with retractions and the open-access share.
Crossref: Works that publishers register with a Crossref DOI each month, with AI words in the title, named models, preprints and retraction notices.
arXiv: Preprint submissions per month in AI categories such as cs.AI, cs.LG and cs.CL, with title and abstract phrases and model names.
Europe PMC: Biology and medicine research that names AI methods — bioRxiv and medRxiv preprints and PubMed papers — with laboratory methods as controls.
Hacker News: Hacker News stories per month that name AI vendors, tools and protocols, against all stories.
Cloudflare Radar: AI crawlers such as GPTBot and ClaudeBot as a share of web traffic, and the share of sites that block or allow them in robots.txt.
Domains (DNIB): Registered domain names in all top-level domains and in .com and .net, and monthly counts for .si, .ai, .io and other AI and developer domains.
Hyperscaler spending (SEC): Quarterly capital spending by Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Oracle and CoreWeave, and by the data-centre landlords Equinix and Digital Realty, from SEC filings.
Nvidia revenue (SEC): Nvidia's revenue per quarter by market — data centre, gaming, visualization and automotive — from its SEC filings.
US construction (Census): Monthly spending on US data centre construction, other office buildings and all private construction, from the Census Bureau's C30 survey.
US imports (Census): Monthly US imports of computer processing units and parts, from the world and from Taiwan, in dollars and in units, from Census trade data.
SEC filings: The share of annual reports (form 10-K) that US companies file with the SEC that mention artificial intelligence, machine learning or generative AI.
US electricity (EIA): Monthly electricity sales to commercial customers in Virginia, Ohio, Georgia, Arizona, New York, California and the whole US, from the EIA.
Ireland's electricity (CSO): The share of Ireland's metered electricity that data centres use, per quarter, from the Central Statistics Office.
VS Code Marketplace: Installs of AI coding extensions on the VS Code Marketplace — GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Codex, Cline, Gemini — against non-AI extensions.
Open VSX: Downloads of AI coding extensions on Open VSX, the registry that Cursor, Windsurf and VSCodium use, against non-AI extensions.
Apple App Store: Apps on the US App Store by release month, and the share of them with AI in the name — sampled from Apple's public sitemaps.
Google Play (AppBrain): Apps listed on Google Play, and how many the store gains and loses each month — counted by AppBrain, not by Google.
California robotaxis (CPUC): Paid robotaxi rides per month in California by Waymo and Cruise, from their reports to the California Public Utilities Commission.
Stack Overflow: New questions per month on Stack Overflow and other Stack Exchange sites, by tag, with answers and non-AI tags as controls.
US jobs (BLS): US payroll jobs per month in call centres, clerical work, graphic design, news publishing and software, with job openings, hires and layoffs.
Indeed: The share of Indeed job postings that ask for AI skills in nine countries, and US job postings for a few occupations.
EU business AI use (Eurostat): The share of EU businesses that use AI, by technology, country and business size, from Eurostat's survey of enterprises.
Wikipedia: Wikipedia edits, editors and readers per month, and page views of articles about AI labs, models, coding tools and ideas.
Taiwan revenue (TWSE): Monthly revenue of TSMC, Quanta, Wistron, Wiwynn and Delta, against Taiwanese electronics firms with little AI work.
