What cadmium costs
What does it cost, and how is it bought and sold?
Cadmium metal sold for about $3.90 a kilogram in 2025, so a year's output is worth roughly $90 million. In real terms the price has fallen to a small fraction of its level in the first half of the 20th century.

Price
The average free market price of cadmium metal was $3.90 per kilogram in 2025. That price is for 99.95% pure metal in 10-tonne lots, delivered to world ports, as reported by Fastmarkets. It was $4.12 in 2024 and $2.56 in 20211.
At that price, the 23,000 tonnes refined in 2025 were worth about $90 million (23,000 tonnes × $3.90 per kilogram)1. This is a rough figure, since most cadmium is sold on private long-term contracts, not at the spot price2.
Cadmium is a by-product. Its exploration and mining costs are part of the costs of zinc, so its price does not need to pay for a mine3. In 1999 and 2000 the cadmium price was less than one third of the zinc price3.

The USGS price series in 1998 dollars starts at about $28 per kilogram in 1900 and peaks at $51 per kilogram in 19164. This was during the First World War, when imports from Germany were cut and US output rose fast3. From 1919 to 1979 it moved between about $12 and $35 per kilogram4.
The price then fell. A supply squeeze caused a spike in 1988 and 19893, to about $21 per kilogram in 1998 dollars4. In the 1990s the price collapsed. By 2000 it was $0.34 per kilogram in 1998 dollars4. USGS said it had been lower since 1998, in current and constant dollars, than at any time in the 20th century3.
In 2007 the New York dealer price rose 155% in a year, to an average of $7.61 per kilogram5. It reached $12.43 in June. According to a number of published sources cited by USGS, the cause was a lack of metal on the spot market5. From 2011 to 2021 the real price stayed between about $0.9 and $2 per kilogram in 1998 dollars4. In 2021 it was $1.54, about a tenth of its level in the 1920s, when it ran from $12 to $234.
How it is traded
Most metal is sold on private long-term contracts, and price reporting agencies publish a spot price. USGS quoted the Platts New York dealer price in 2014 and the Fastmarkets price for global ports in 202661.
In 2019 China was the largest consumer and India a close second, followed at a distance by Belgium and Sweden2. Buyers in India were the most active on the spot market2. In 2007 Belgium turned much of its metal into cadmium compounds for battery makers abroad5.
The United States imported its unwrought cadmium mainly from China (50%) and Germany (33%) in 2021 to 20241. Cadmium oxide enters free of duty, while cadmium sulfide and cadmium pigments pay 3.1%1.
