Phantom phone vibrations

You feel your phone buzz in your pocket, check it, and nothing happened. Most phone users get this. It is a normal learning effect in the brain, not a fault.

How it works

The skin sends small signals all the time. A muscle twitches. Cloth rubs. A pulse beats against a pocket. Normally the brain ignores these. When you carry a phone, each real buzz teaches the brain that a sensation in that spot means a message1. This is classical conditioning, the same process that made Pavlov’s dogs drool at a bell2. Over weeks, the brain lowers its threshold for that spot. It starts to flag ordinary sensations as vibrations.

The result is a false alarm. The brain guesses “phone” and is wrong. The brain treats missing a message as worse than a false alarm, so it errs on the side of checking1. The same trade-off explains why you hear your name in background noise.

Between 68% and 89% of phone users report phantom vibrations1. In one study of undergraduates, 89% had felt them and 40% felt them at least once a week1. Among hospital staff who carry pagers and phones, 68% reported them1. People who react more strongly to their phone in general get more false alarms1.

Phantom vibrations fade when the trigger changes. Moving the phone to a different pocket, switching vibration off, or carrying it in a bag reduces them within weeks1.

History and culture

The Australian Macquarie Dictionary chose “phantom vibration syndrome” as its word of the year for 20121. Before that, the same feeling with ringtones was called “ringxiety”1. Doctors who carried pagers in the 1990s described the same thing, so the effect is older than smartphones.
