How common

About 70% of people About 10% get them every day.

Does this happen to you?

How it works

As you fall asleep, your muscles relax and your brain shifts from waking to sleep. Doctors suspect that nerves in the brainstem sometimes misfire3. The result is a sudden contraction of the arms, legs, or whole body1. A feeling of falling or a short dream image sometimes comes with it1. Some people also see a flash of light or hear a loud sound3. Then you are awake again, heart racing. Caffeine, stress, tiredness, and hard exercise late in the day all make the jerks more frequent1.

The cause is not fully known. One idea is that the brain reads the sudden muscle relaxation as a fall and sends a “catch yourself” signal1. Another idea is that it is a leftover reflex from primate ancestors who slept in trees, where a relaxing body meant a real risk of falling1. Neither idea is proved.

How common it is

About 70% of people have them at least once in their lives, and about 10% have them every day1. They happen at any age but are more common in adults3.

Is it a problem?

No. A hypnic jerk is not a seizure. It does not damage muscle or brain. For most people it does not harm sleep. Frequent, strong jerks can make it hard to fall asleep1. A regular bedtime, less caffeine, and less screen time before bed can reduce them13.

See a doctor if:

  • jerks happen while you are fully awake,
  • jerks repeat in a steady rhythm,
  • you bite your tongue or wet the bed during a jerk,
  • you are confused for a while after the event.

Those are not the pattern of a sleep start.

History and culture

The word “hypnic” comes from the Greek word for sleep. The half-asleep state where the jerks happen has its own name, hypnagogia2. Vivid images and sounds can appear in the same state.
