Attached and free earlobes

Some earlobes hang free and others join the head directly. Textbooks taught this as one gene, but a 2017 study found at least 49 genetic regions involved, and the two shapes blend into each other.

How it works
The earlobe is the soft flap at the bottom of the ear. It has no cartilage, only skin, fat, and blood vessels1. In a free lobe the flap hangs below the point where the ear meets the head. In an attached lobe the bottom of the ear joins the head directly, with no hanging part.
School biology classes long used this as the textbook example of a trait controlled by one gene, with free lobes dominant and attached lobes recessive2. That story is wrong. When people are lined up, lobes do not sort into two neat groups. They form a range, from clearly free through in-between shapes to clearly attached2. Family studies show that two parents with attached lobes can have children with free lobes, which a one-gene recessive trait would not allow2.
In 2017 a study of 74,660 people scanned the whole genome for links to lobe shape and found at least 49 regions of DNA involved4. The trait is polygenic, meaning many genes each add a small effect4.
How common it is
One study measured it directly. Researchers scored the ears of 1,000 Korean adults in their twenties and found attached lobes in 61.2%, more often in women, at 65.4%, than in men, at 57.0%3. That number does not travel. Differences in lobe attachment between populations are well documented4, and because lobes form a range rather than two groups, the count also moves with where the observer draws the line2. The 2017 genome-wide study scored lobes as free, partially attached, or attached, and its attachment rates differed between cohorts4.
Try it
- Look at one ear in a mirror, side on.
- Find the lowest point where the ear meets the cheek.
- If the lobe hangs below that point and you can lift it away from the head, it is free.
- If the lobe curves straight into the cheek with no hanging flap, it is attached.
- Check the other ear, then check family members. Expect a mix and some in-between cases.
Is it a problem?
No. Earlobe shape has no known effect on hearing or health1. It is one of the classic classroom examples of a harmless human trait, taught alongside tongue rolling and hitchhiker’s thumb, and all three turn out to be more genetically complex than the simple story suggests5. There is nothing about lobe shape itself worth mentioning to a doctor.
History and culture
The lobe stays in textbooks because students can check it easily, even though the one-gene story never fit the family data25.
