Geometric nightmares

A kind of dream, usually during fever in childhood, filled with huge or tiny shapes, infinite space, crushing pressure, and dread. The name comes from an online forum, not a medical text, but each piece of it is well known to neuroscience.

How it works
People describe the same things again and again. A sphere or a cube that is infinitely large and yet sits in a normal room. Fine grids or threads that fill all of space. Pressure, as if the air has turned to stone. A silence so complete that it hurts. Being tiny and enormous at once. Simple things, such as a ball rolling or a task that repeats, become unbearable1. Most people first have them as young children during a fever. Many say the shapes arrive a day before they feel ill1.
No paper has studied geometric nightmares by that name. But every part of the experience has a known relative.
The size paradox belongs to Alice in Wonderland syndrome, a distortion of size and distance, linked to fever and migraine, that mostly affects children4. Fever appears to disturb the circuits that keep object size stable, near the point where the temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes meet4. Young children are the most affected, and their size-constancy circuits are still maturing4.
The shapes belong to a second system. In 1926, the psychologist Heinrich Klüver sorted the patterns people see in hallucinations of every kind into four groups: lattices, cobwebs, tunnels, and spirals. He called them form constants and listed fever delirium among their triggers3. In 2001, mathematicians showed why they recur. When the primary visual cortex is destabilised, by drugs, fever, or the edge of sleep, its own wiring produces standing waves of activity. Mapped back onto the eye, those waves are exactly the four form constants3. Geometry is what a visual cortex does when left to itself.
A hypothesis that fits the reports is that a geometric nightmare is a hybrid state. The child is in the borderland between waking and sleep, where hypnagogic imagery is normal5. Fever pushes the visual cortex into producing form constants, which supply the shapes. The same fever disturbs size processing, which gives those shapes impossible size and distance. Dread follows when the brain cannot reconcile what it is computing. No experiment has tested this. It is an interpretation that joins known pieces.
The dreams stop when the fever does. Most people have them less often as they grow up, and many adults get them again only when very ill.
History and culture
The name is not medical. In November 2006, a user called The Cusp opened a thread on the DreamViews forum titled “Geometric Night Terrors @ Fever Dreams”2. It grew to 225 posts as people recognised their own childhood2. The subreddit r/geometricnightmares followed. It defines the phenomenon as a dream, often during illness, with shapes or objects, themes of infinity, pressure, unease or terror, a void, incomprehensibly large or small objects, and a crushing silence1. The term does not appear in the DSM-5, the ICD-10, or any medical journal. It has since spread to TikTok under tags such as #geometricnightmare.
Reports across forums match closely. People describe a ceiling fan that is both against the nose and miles away, hands that feel grotesquely huge, nested grey cubes that zoom in and out, and shapes moving so slowly that their size implies an impossible force1. The consistency across strangers is the best evidence that this is a real, shared state.
